Inkscape SVG workshop
Bring your computer with Inkscape installed to this hands-on workshop/tutorial, presented by Adam Hyde of FLOSS Manuals and Brianna Laugher. Inkscape is a free software editor for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). SVGs are commonly used on Wikimedia projects for icons, diagrams, maps and more. Using a mix of official Inkscape documentation, FLOSS Manuals developed helpfiles and various Wikimedia help pages, attendees will be guided from the very first steps of understanding the Inkscape interface through to creating their own SVGs based on existing bitmap images. No experience necessary.
This will be a practical tutorial/workshop led by Adam Hyde (FLOSS Manuals) and Brianna Laugher (Wikimedia editor). Attendees can either follow the example file or make similar changes to their own file. First we will discuss SVG basics, how they work in MediaWiki, and open a simple file in a text editor to examine it. Next we will go through the basics of the Inkscape GUI and menu options. Then we will guide attendees through the creation of a typical SVG used in Wikimedia – a simple object diagram. If necessary we will also go through the Wikimedia Commons uploading process.
